Gairo Sant'Elena

Panoramica delle rovine di Gairo vecchia

Gairo Sant'Elena stands on the side of a steep gorge. The very name of Gairo Sant'Elena describes its position in the area; in fact the toponym derives from the Greek words "ga" and "roa" which mean 'land that flows', an expression which clearly outlines the hydro-geological situation of the area. The present town rose up, following the evacuation of the old inhabited centre lying just a few kilometres away, which had to be abandoned because of the landslides caused by the great floods between 1951 and 1953.

The territory is distinguished by wonderful landscapes, such as the calcareous turret of Perda Liana, a real natural monument populated by moufflons where the “Gypaeto barbato” flies. There are numerous archaeological sites in the area like the Nuraghic areas of “Serbissi” and “Perdu Isu£ and the rocky ramparts of Taquisara where we find a “giants’ tomb”. The most important feasts are the one held on Whitsunday with three days of festivities dedicated to the Holy Spirit and also the feast in honour of the “Madonna della Neve” on the first Sunday in August. The wine and food traditions of the village are characterised by the production of the typical sweets and cakes like "pirighittus" and "amaretti", and renowned local wines.
